And one cried to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts:
The whole earth is full of His glory!” (Isaiah 6:3)
The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!” (Revelation 4:8)
Have you ever wondered what Heaven thinks of God? Our thoughts are so cluttered, random, fractured we often fail to maintain a consistent mental and emotional posture towards our Maker. Oh, for the day when our minds, emotions, and wills, with perfect clarity, engage the Almighty; when with perfect aptitude, resolve, and affection we will look upon the One who formed us in our mother’s womb! Yet, right now, what is the perfect witness of Heaven?
When unfallen creatures gaze upon God, what is their response? Revelation 4 describes a door opening in heaven. Going through that door, the beloved Apostle John found himself eavesdropping on the worship of the four living creatures around God’s throne. These four living creatures have one purpose—to gaze on God and give witness to what they see. They have eyes within and without that open and close as they plummet and mine the depths of their Maker. They peer into God and give ceaseless testimony to the rest of created order about what He is like. What do they find? What do they discover?
Searching God’s endless being, they unanimously proclaim three times over that He is Holy. God is not only all-powerful; He is dazzling in His beauty, beyond comprehension. They shout to the rest of creation through the simplest phrase, “Holy, Holy, Holy,” that there is none like God. His beauty requires their constant witness: “Your Maker is lovely and beyond anything you could ever imagine. He is infinitely more dazzling and powerful than anything in the universe. His attributes operate in true perfection. There is no flaw in Him. He has perfect symmetry, perfect harmony, and perfect potency. He is the Lord God Almighty. He is Holy, Holy, Holy!”
The 24 governmental elders in heaven hear the living creatures’ witness and tremble with fascination before the brilliant potency of God’s being. They must fall down. They must join in. They must worship! Throwing their crowns before the beautiful God, they, too, lift their voices, “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created.”
The evil one incessantly attempts to hide these great truths from us. In fact, Revelation 12 informs us that the evil one accuses the saints night and day. Satan continually lies to us concerning God—His nature, plans, and works. We must overcome the accuser by listening to the witness of Scripture and the pure witness of Heaven. We must hear their cry. We must fall down. We must join in. We must worship, for heaven testifies that in this place we find fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore.
Heavenly Father, show us Your glory. Reveal to us what heaven knows about You. Open a door of revelation for us in Your Word. Let us see You rightly as we meditate upon the Scriptures. Give us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of who You are. Open up the eyes of our understanding that we might know You, that we might with divine clarity see the object of heaven’s worship, the beautiful God clothed in the brilliance of a billion stars. In Jesus Name. Amen.
